One of 5 builder installed smoke detectors started beeping. I replaced the battery and it kept on beeping. I called in an electrician who told me that the detector had to be replaced. That he had to replace all 5 of the detectors because replacing one would set all the other detector to beeping because the “signals” would be “out of sinque”with to other builder installed smoke detectors. Is he on the level?

The smoke alarms placed in our front hall, from three different manufacturers, have been short-lived, finally emitting their ear-piercing noise non-stop. I have checked with our local and county fire experts: Most recently tried photoelectric. Same problem. Finally contacted one of the manufacturers. CFLs are fluorescent lights and smoke alarms are not compatible with fluorescent lights. We had switched to CFLs throughout our house over the last few years, and the proximity of the light fixture to the alarm in the front hall was apparently the problem. DO YOU KNOW OF A FREE-STANDING SMOKE ALARM THAT CAN BE USED IN THE PRESENCE OF CFLS?

My house has a smoke detector in every room and they have a button to test the battery. When you push it, it makes a sound but only two make the sound. Is that safe that the others don’t beep or do I need to install new detectors? I’ve replaced the batteries but they still wont beep.
